The resistance of the farmers of Singur, West Bengal, India, against the forced expropriation of their land by the local government for the benefit of multinationals such as Tata Motors and Fiat Auto. The struggle is recounted by the protagonists and by artists, writers, economists, trade unionists, and ordinary men and women involved in the protests. The documentary reveals the other side of India's economic boom: the Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and the forced social transformation from an agro-pastoral system to an industrial one. Text by Arundhati Roy.
«The cry of those without a voice, the opposition to a concept of unsustainable development enforced with the use of arms. The portrait of a country growing fatter as it devours itself in the uncertain prospect of future development. But this form of development, incarnated by Tata and Fiat, is achieved by destroying some of the country's most fertile farmlands. Entire villages are being razed to create room for factories that will produce "the world's most economical car"... if one could call the price of thousands of human lives cheap».
