One of the oldest fishing techniques in the Mediterranean, harpoon swordfish fishing has been practiced in the waters of the Straits of Messina for over 2000 years. Giuseppe, the son of Nino, one of the best local fishermen, is studying marine biology and is reluctant to kill animals. Giuseppe’s dilemma is an exemplar of the present day conflict between exploitation of nature and a new environmental awareness. Giuseppe will become an expert fisherman in keeping with a tradition that strikes the right balance between predator and prey.
