In Calabria

In Calabria there are people who live as at the beginning of time: shepherds pour milk into buckets and work it, men make every tool with their own hands.

As in the past they sow with broad gestures, work together in the woods picking chestnuts, prepare a charcoal pile: in the peasant world mutual help was necessary.

Then images of factories, stationary cranes, degradation. A whole world of traditions has been condemned with the violent death of peasant culture. Pourings of concrete, cold structures of the University of Calabria: the vision of anonymous, new buildings and, in contrast, old ruins introduces the dramatic theme of emigration which, together with the degradation of the environment, is one of the most serious damages that has occurred in Calabria. Abandoned factories dot the region, the arrival of capital has favored the birth of an entrepreneurial mafia. If the Calabrians do not rediscover their identity, their authentic culture, it will be difficult to restore this land.
