Since the spring floods of the Enguri River, in western Georgia, cause a substantial accumulation of fertile silt, an old ethnic Abkhazian man, together with his orphaned teenage granddaughter, decides to take advantage of the situation and begins to dedicate his time to growing corn, living in harmony with nature. While the girl attends school to get her high school diploma, an injured Russian soldier finds refuge in the hut where the two live. In the meantime, however, soldiers from the Georgian army are also moving in, behaving arrogantly and provocatively, consuming the man's food supplies, and trying to seduce the young woman. The situation becomes even more complicated when summer comes, bringing with it a new series of floods that are likely to ruin their crops and destroy their home.
