Ccà semu” – “we’re here” – is the way the inhabitants of Lampedusa declare, in part with pride in part with resignation, their place in the world. Located about 100 km from mainland Italy, closer to Tunisia than Sicily, Lampedusa has come to symbolize the Mediterranean migration crisis. Faced by the ethical challenges of an international problem, the islanders must cope with the influx and find solutions to the local problems of a self-dependent community on Europe’s fringe. Through the accounts of the island’s residents, the film offers a look into how life on the island has changed with the daily arrival of migrants to its shores.
