Taking a line from a Fabrizio de Andrè song, 'A Cimma-a', Silvio Soldini depicts the changes that have transformed Liguria. The five chapters ('Flowers', 'Olives', 'Fishing', 'Seamen', 'Steel mill') form a chronicle of the lives of five persons portrayed in striking pictures and memories of a simpler life, of days gone by, and of backbreaking work against a background of changes in social structure and land-use. After years of rampant modernization and industrialization, efforts are under way to restore the landscape and to conserve its scenic beauty.

«I really didn't know what kind of film I wanted to make when I started looking around for locations. [...] The initial idea for the film was more literary. I read impressions of various artists, poets, and writers who had passed through Liguria. [...] That led to the idea to ask people to talk about the area, what it meant for them in the past and what it means for them now. So after meeting a couple of people, I decided to follow through with the new approach to the subject».
