Pariah Dog

Tens of thousands of stray dogs live and die on city streets in India. They are pariahs, one of the oldest canine breeds, so called because they live at the margin of the community yet in contact with humans. They are also at the center of a heated debate whether modern India can continue this cohabitation. Three years in the making, the film gives a kaleidoscopic picture of Calcutta, one of the world’s most densely populated cities, through the eyes of four people and the dogs they take care of. They share a similar fate, beyond time and place. Their response is to show compassion and affection for creatures in the midst of harshness and indifference.
