On the Sicilian side of the Strait of Messina the sea is a liquid border. It is a stronger force than the sands of time and rules the fate of those who live on its coast. Winter months go by as usual while people wait for the summer season. Michele and Antonio repair their felucca boat in preparation for fishing for swordfish, and Pippo weaves the creel nets he will then lower into the sea from May to September. They all live in expectation of the right tide, the right season. This thousand-year wait chains them to the body of water upon which their lives must sail.
