Barbargia is renowned for its rugged landscape and primitive Carnival celebrations that can be traced back to prehistoric origins. From the period of Pre-Nuragic cave graffiti to the present, the ancient rite of life and death continues to be celebrated in an area where sentiment against central government runs deep and where poverty, banditry, and blood feuds between families have not been erased from memory. Failed industrialization and labor disputes matched well with the notion of sacrifice rooted in the ancestral agro-pastoral system. All is ashes, pollen, and buds, awaiting the arrival of spring in the eternal sacrifice of human existence.
