Baba Mandela

Directed by

Kevin is eight years old and has been living all his life in Libera, a shanty town on the outskirts of Nairobi. His birth has never been registered. so he does not exist for the law. Travelling around the country and talking to people, he finds out the reasons for his difficult condition. Once he is back, he writes to the former South African President to tell him what he has learnt about environmental refugees, social differences, and precarious health services. For each story Kevin collects an object representing the symbols of an Africa which does not want to surrender.

The film is one of the principal documents of “Breaking the cycle”, the AMREF project (no profit medical organization with location in South Africa) and Legambiente, that have crossed Kenya and Tanzania during a trip of accusation and study of environmental risk. The documentary has been presented at the Johannesburg meeting and to the 59th Venice Film Festival.
