Mark Watney is one of the first astronauts to set foot on Mars: struck by a sudden storm and believed dead, he is abandoned by the expedition crew. Alone on a hostile planet, with no way of communicating with ground control, and little food, he is determined to survive and adapt to life on Mars. The obstacles become insurmountable, then someone at NASA discovers that Mark is still alive.
