He has demonstrated an enormous range in his work as director and producer: science fiction as seen in Alien (1979) and Blade Runner (1982), comedy in Matchstick Men (2003), action/historical in Gladiator (2000) and Robin Hood (2010), and the road movie Thelma & Louise (1991), which garnered him an Oscar nomination for Best Director. The Martian received two Golden Globe awards in 2016.
