Turin is the first city to have part of its metropolitan area recognized a biosphere reserve by the UNESCO Man & Biosphere (MAB) Programme for the conservation and protection of a landscape, its inhabitants and ecosystems. The Collina Po is unique in its environmental diversity though near a city. Extending 1700 square kilometres around the town of San Raffaele Cimena, the area has a long history of sustainable rice cultivation in harmony with nature.
