Erde

Directed by

A portrait of seven places on Earth where humans have made large-scale transformations: mountains moved in California, a tunnel under the Brenner Pass, an open mine in Hungary, a marble quarry in Italy, a copper mine in Spain, a salt mine in Wolfenbüttel for storing radioactive waste material, tar sands in Canada. Every year, billions of tons of earth are moved with shovels, diggers, and dynamite. Extensive landscapes shown from the air resemble abstract paintings and then close up reveal how all sense of proportion has gone awry; the rumble of the earthmovers mixes with the voices of the workers as they talk about technological advances, environmental damage, and an uncertain future.
