Abyss Clean up

Directed by
In 2016 the National Research Council (CNR) and the University of Rome published a joint study on the discovery of a waste dump in the submarine canyons in the Strait of Messina. The discovery by a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) was not an isolated case but rather one of many underwater waste dumps around the world, from Gibraltar to Nice, Korea to Africa. With the aid of sophisticated last-generation equipment, the film documents underwater explorations carried out in late June 2023 by the film director and CNR marine geologists, marine biologists, and robotics engineers. The location was where the Mediterranean and the Ionian sea meet at a depth of 600 meters.

«In 2019, I accidentally read an Italian scientific publication reporting alarming data on the accidental discovery of a massive accumulation of waste over 1,000 meters deep in the Strait of Messina.

According to scientists, this phenomenon, called "marine litter", could affect all coastlines around the world where rivers border marine canyons and are close to human-inhabited areas.

I was already passionate about protecting rivers and seas, so I decided to delve deeper. I had no idea what path I would have to take to complete this film, whose main theme is, above all, a shared goal: protecting the sea and its inhabitants from ourselves, through study, activism, and daily commitment. This concept is summarized in the film as "creating a network of life to counter the network of death." The Abyss Clean Up project was born to raise public awareness of seabed pollution and possible strategies to combat it. The first filming took place in the difficult and troubled year of 2020, but despite the ongoing pandemic, several key objectives for the documentary were achieved. Chief among these was the creation of a team of divers, fishermen, photographers, and videographers, both in Sicily and Liguria. Furthermore, the experience immediately had a tangible environmental impact, as those involved continue their independent, volunteer work to this day».
