Waste Land

Directed by

Brazilian-born artist Vik Muniz is famous for his portraits composed of materials recycled from the objects he finds in the subject's surroundings. Lucy Walker accompanies Muniz on his latest project to one of the world's largest city dumps: Jardim Gramacho on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. Muniz's initial idea for the project is radically changed by the impact with the location; he decides to involve a group of catadores - children that earn their livelihood by trash picking - and to rework the concept through a collage of images reflecting their desires and lives. Score by electronic music artist Moby.
