The surgeon, a migratory fish that swims upriver to deposit its eggs, has inhabited the Po river for over 200 million years. Its survival is threatened by pollution and the dikes of Italy’s largest hydroelectric power plant, which block the fish’s migratory route. To maintain species survival, samples are kept in huge artificial basins where they can reproduce. The accounts of young researchers and volunteers involved in conserving the area’s biodiversity and defending it against the dangers threatening it are told as if by the sturgeon themselves. It is a testimony against short-sighted politics that can lead to extinction of the species.
