The Real Dirt on Farmer John

Directed by

The epic tale of John Paterson, nonconformist farmer of the American Midwest. After the death of his father, John transformed his traditional family farm into an experiment in art and agriculture, making it a gathering place for hippies, radicals and artists in the 1960s. Buffeted by an economic crisis in the 1980s, the farm failed. Isolated by gossip defaming him as drug dealer and worshipper of Satan, Paterson left the farm and roamed Latin America until his search led him back to his roots. Back in his homeland he founded the Angelic Organics, an agricultural village where art and agriculture meet once again.

The Real Dirt on Farmer John is a culmination of 55 years of John’s life as a farmer, writer and activist, seen through family home movies, photographs, film and video. By filming the emotional events unfolding in John’s life, I’ve tried to tell a story that unearths the fate of the American farmer and the impact it has on all of us.
