The Beast Within

Directed by

Although illegal in most countries, animal fights continue to be a popular blood and guts ritual. But what lies behind this cruel, ancient form of 'entertainment'? Employing brilliant, masterfully handled photography and an engaging style, Scagliola investigates behind the scenes of these so-called blood sports in four stories, from cock fights in Bali to globally transmitted robot wars, in which violence and barbarity are made acceptable by replacing animals with machines, sublimating cruelty and the fight instinct.

Director's Notes

«Exploiting the natural fighting instinct of animals, humans sublimate hatred with the experience of a blood sport. [...] Are the desire for violence and the desire to kill part of man? Are they a reaction to common morality? [...] These are questions that modern civilization prefers to avoid because they are at odds with our idea of human nature».
