During the 1960s, a huge petrochemical plant that went into operation in Porto Torres (Sassari) was claimed as the ultimate solution to reducing the area's unemployment. Today, however, the plant workers are fighting to keep the remaining operative divisions of the facility open and many former workers are facing serious health problems from chronic occupational exposure to toxic substances.
