Based on a Japanese legend, the movie tells the story of a war between opposing populations and the terrible divinities of the Forest. In a far away village Ashitaka, the last Emishi warrior, is forced to kill a monster to protect his people. But he finds out that the creature he killed is in fact a God from the Forest. Being damned, he sets off to discover and kill the divinity who cast the curse on him. Along the way he is involved in a fight between two populations and meets the princess Mononoke raised by wolves…
