biography

He is regarded as one of the greatest Japanese animation directors. His masterpieces made through Studio Ghibli, which he co-founded with his mentor Isao Takahata in 1985, include Howl’s Moving Castle (2001), which won the Golden Bear at Berlin and an Oscar in 2003. In 2005 he received the Golden Lion career award at Venice. After the release of The Wind has Risen (2013) he announced his retirement. He received an Oscar for his career in 2014.
