Pleistocene Park

Directed by

The film tells the incredible story of geophysicist Sergej Zimov and his project to create Pleistocene Park, a natural reserve, in the autonomous Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) in the Russian Far East, in 1996. The objective was to recreate a mammoth steppe ecosystem of the glacial era and to counteract permafrost thawing and global warming as much as possible. Together with his son, Nikita, the aged scientist faces the challenges of nature, bureaucracy, and lack of adequate means in their efforts to repopulate the area with reindeer, musk ox, wapiti deer, and bison. Two extraordinary personalities are portrayed in their attempt to change the relationship between man and nature.
