Over the Hedge

Directed by

Based on the Michael Fry and T. Lewis comic, Over the Hedge uses a highly amusing story to deal with the theme of food and consumerism. RJ, a wily racoon and expert food thief, one night tries to steal the food stocks of Vincent, a huge bear, who catches RJ in the act and demands his food back. Wandering through the forest, RJ meets an animal community headed by Verne, the turtle. The animals compare their respective lifestyles: RJ learns about gathering and saving food for harder times. But when he persuades the others to venture beyond the forest edge and into a housing development, their accustomed practices no longer work.

Director's Notes

«I've always had dogs, cats, gerbils, in my life and at home. I've always been a mountain person rather than a beach person. I actually live pretty far from the coast, right up against the forest. Growing up, my backyard was this brush line, beyond which was a field full of porcupines, raccoons, and skunks, and the whole thing. So, I would play in that field all day long for the decade before it became home. So, I feel like there's a bit of autobiography in this, challenging the audience to maybe see the world from the point of view of the animals» (Tim Johnson)
