Mbeubeus
Directed by
Everyday waste from Dakar arrives at the Mbeubeus dump: 1300 tons a day of material of every kind: home rubbish, sanitary and industrial waste. More than 2000 people earn their livelihood by working in the dump: some collect items, some sell, others buy, repair or recycle them. Mame Ngor is one of the 300 children working in the dump as collectors. On average, a child earns 1000 Cfa (1,52 euros) a day and for many families this income is essential for survival. Mame Ngor tells about his days in the dump, revealing a world that amazes for its organization and normality, despite the toxic smoke, the persistent stench and the awful scenery.
«Mbeubeus is one of the countless realities that exist on the outskirts of cities in developing countries, where others' garbage is the only resource for many people. Made in collaboration with Fréres des Hommes Europe (Man's Brothers), an NGO that supports a youth center for educating the children who live and work in the dump outside Dakar and teaching them a trade, the film is a simple and straightforward testimony of an everyday circumstance that is both extraordinary and unimaginable alike».
