Le città invivibili. Torino la città dell'automobile
Directed by
Based on Guido Vitale's book 'Vita e morte dell'automobile', this documentary was filmed in Turin and shows how the automobile has taken over city streets and squares, making pedestrians out of the rest of us. 'We are immersed in a flow of metal, robbed of living space and subjected to unbearable clouds of fumes and noise…'. The city center and outskirts alike are invaded by cars; the rare pedestrian zones are empty; city monuments and statues are threatened by the effects of traffic, as is our safety when we go for a walk. These and other considerations on sustainable consumption, environmental education and political initiatives were discussed at the National Forum on Environmental Education and Sustainability held in Turin in June.
«The word 'nature' risks extinction. The predominant idea is anti-nature. We live on a traffic island: beyond our doorstep extends a congested network of slow-moving metal with nowhere to park it; we are submerged in a cloud of fumes and noise. Each of us – scientists and artists included – envelop ourselves with our cars, making them part of our bodies».
