Summer has arrived at the Sicilian inlands, hills percoursed by highways, concrete frames dotting the grainfields, the chirp of crickets and the roar of NATO fighter planes overhead. Ten-year-old Giorgio goes off to explore the rural landscape marred by human activity. Meanwhile, an 86-year-old shepherd goes about his usual business in his delipidated house: carving wood in the morning while listening to an old radio, then bringing the cows to pasture on the hills nearby. Time passes.
