La montagna magica

Directed by

The former asbestos mine in Balangero, northwest of Turin, in operation from 1918 to 1990, was Europe’s largest open-pit mine. Today, the area is designated for a vast land reclamation project. Traces of its industrial mining past can be found together with a partly spontaneous, partly planned progressive return of animal and plant species. As the memories of the local communities begin to fade in the emerging ecosystem, the mountain gains life from the tales of the nighttime dreams of the local inhabitants, shaping a new landscape of the unconscious. How deeply buried are the effects of this experience and what does this disemboweled mountain have in store for the future?
