Snake Dance

Directed by

A reflection on the birth of the nuclear era from the Congo jungles to uranium mines to the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, home of the Manhattan Project, a research and development project that produced the first atomic bombs during World War II, and, finally, Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The story draws on details from the life of two eminent personalities at the time: the physicist and Manhattan Project director, Robert Oppenheimer, and the German art historian, Aby Warburg, who studied the religious symbolism of the Hopi Indians, and the snake dance in particular, convinced that human tragedy derives from man’s inability to face his deepest fears.
