The earth's surface area measures about 149 million sq. km. This means that each inhabitant has a living space equal to 3 football fields. But this virtual space is poorly used. Most of the earth's surface does not appeal to most of its inhabitants, being either too hot or too cold or too monotonous or too noisy. And since so few places are attractive, those that are are overcrowded, which seems paradoxical given the vast natural areas that remain sparsely populated.
