Deserto verde
Directed by
Eucalyptus monoculture is one of the main causes of the devastating wildfire that swept through Pedrógão Grande in central Portugal in June 2017, claiming numerous victims and destroying 53,000 hectares of forest land that will eventually become desert. Through eyewitness accounts and an analysis by João Camargo, zootechnology-environmental engineer, the film painstakingly pieces together history, current affairs, botany, climatology, and economics to illustrate the environmental and social impact of forestry policies that promote monoculture. A lesson can be learned from one person who persuaded his village to reconvert to biodiversity in a grass-roots effort against ruinous agriculture practices.
