biography

He was born in Catania in 1916; he began his career as a cameraman. In 1955 he directed his first documentary, Il Fiume dei Faraoni. In 1964 came his most famous film, L'Ultimo uomo sulla terra (The Last Man on Earth), a cult-movie precursor to horror films like George A. Romero's The Night of The Living Dead (1968). The story was based on a novel by Richard Matheson, and also inspired Boris Sagal's The Omega Man (1971). He made his last feature, Vergine per un bastardo, in 1966.
