biography
Nato a Catania nel 1916, inizia la sua carriera cinematografica come operatore per poi passare alla regia nel 1955 con il suo primo documentario: Il Fiume dei Faraoni. Nel 1964 gira il suo film più noto, un cult-movie precursore di pellicole di film horror a partire da The Night of The Living Dead (La Notte dei Morti Viventi, 1968) di George A. Romero. La sceneggiatura di L’ultimo uomo sulla terra (The Last man on Earth, 1963), tratta da un racconto di Richard Matheson, ha ispirato 1975: Occhi Bianchi sul Pianeta Terra (The Omega Man, 1971) di Boris Sagal. Del 1966 è il suo ultimo lungometraggio Vergine per un bastardo.
