È nata nel 1969 a Delhi, in India. Attrice teatrale e cinematografica, esordisce nel 1996 nel film Ek Thi Goonja. Impegnata in attività sociali, alla carriera di attrice – che l'ha portata a diventare una delle più note e apprezzate interpreti del cinema indiano – affianca quella di regista di documentari.
