biography
Nato a Tbilisi, Georgia, nel 1903, nel 1925 viene ammesso al Tbilisi Film Studios. Collabora con Kuleshov (Locomotive No. 10006), Tretyakov e con Gerasimov. Nel 1944 si trasferisce a Los Angeles. Tornato in URSS divenne delegato al Ministero della Cinematografia. Nel 1958 con The Cranes are Flying vince la Palma d'Oro a Cannes. Muore a Mosca nel 1973.
