Nato a Neviges, ha studiato teatro, cinema e tv a Colonia. Nel 1981 esordisce con il documentario Ich hatte schon begonnen, die Freiheit zu vergessen. Dal 1982 al 1996 lavora come sound mixer in produzioni destinate al piccolo e grande schermo, mentre dal 1996 scrive, dirige e produce i propri film.
