Nel 2001 vince il Grand Prix al Festival d'Annecy e l'Oscar con il corto d'animazione Father and Daughter. Il film suscita l'ammirazione del maestro Isao Takahata, che si farà mentore di La tortue rouge, primo lungometraggio dell'autore, presentato al Festival di Cannes 2016.
