He won the Grand Prix at the 2001 Festival d'Annecy and an Oscar for his animated short film Father and Daughter. The film attracted the admiration of Isao Takahata, who mentored La tortue rouge, De Wit's first feature, presented at the 2016 Cannes Festival.
