Dopo gli studi in recitazioni, filosofia e psicologia negli Stati Uniti, ha studiato televisione e cinema all'Accademia di Monaco. Oltre a essere regista, è una affermata scrittrice. Tra i suoi film: Mitten ins Herz (1983), Im innern des Wals (1984), Uomini (1985), Paradies (1986), Money (1989), Lei, io e lui (1988), Happy Birthday, detective! (1992), Nackt (2002), The Fisherman and His Wife (2005).
