Dagli anni '60, regista, cameraman e tecnico del suono per le emittenti NBC, CBS e per National Geographic, oltre che per registi quali Brian De Palma e Robert Elfstrom, Alan Dater inizia a collaborare dal 1989 con Lisa Merton. Insieme dirigeranno e produrranno i documentari Wolf Kahn: Landscape Painter (1989), Bridge of Fire (1991), Home to Tibet (1996) e The World in Claire's Classroom (2000), vincitori di numerosi riconoscimenti internazionali.
