Descriptions of the Salento area of Puglia written by travellers in the 19th century contrast with the state of those places and sceneries today. Illegal waste dumps and the farmers' abandoning of the fields have turned parts of the countryside into no-man's land. The whole area, now border land, should be recuperated by creating an individual consciousness that can learn to care for the collective heritage of the landscape.
