L'ultimo paradiso

Directed by

Four tales narrate the life of a Polynesian living on the mythical islands of the South Seas: a boy, a man, a woman, an old man. A human reality about to be overwhelmed by the unstoppable transformations of a wonderful but doomed world.

The film opens with an account of the test of courage that the inhabitants of some islands in Indonesia undergo: jumping from a tower with their feet tied to a liana. The second episode tells the story of Atemi a child who overcomes his instinctive fear of the sea by accompanying his father, a pearl fisherman, who earns his living forty metres down in the nightmare of sharks. On another island, the love of two young people seems compromised after Terei, the boy, decides to turn down traditional work in the sea for the mine and the city. In the last episode, two young people get to know each other and fall in love during a festive fishing party. The wedding will be celebrated according to evocative local rituals.
