biography
Born in Paris in 1917, he began his film making career in the late 1940s. He became a pioneer of ethnographic cinema and has made over 150 films and documentaries. A theorist and experimenter, his cinema-verité has influenced many directors and sparked ongoing debates on the role and future of film. Among Rouch's most important films: Les Maiters Fous (1955), Cronique d'un été (1960), Le Chasse au Lion à l'Arc (Golden Lion at Venice Film Festival, 1965), Jaguar (1971), Dionysos (1984), Enigma (shot in Torino in 1986).
