biography

He made his first film La commare secca (1962) with screenplay written by Pasolini, followed by: Prima della rivoluzione (1964); Strategia del ragno (1970) based on an idea by Borges; Il conformista (1970) adapted from a novel by Moravia; Ultimo tango a Parigi (1972) cut by censors; and Novecento (1976). His L'ultimo imperatore (1989) won nine Oscars and was the first in a trilogy that continued with Il tè nel deserto (1990) and Piccolo Buddha (1993). In 1996 he returned to Italy to make Io ballo da sola, followed by L'assedio (1998). His most recent title is The Dreamers (2003).
