Nato a Bucarest nel 1965, si trasferisce a New York nel 1979 dove, alcuni anni dopo, inizia a studiare fotografia alla "School of Visual Arts". Nel 1990 conclude il suo primo documentario, Plays of light at the Maxim, al termine di un corso in Germania alla "Munich Film School". Prima di portare a termine Asta-E ha girato e prodotto diversi film tra cui Gratian (1995) e Face Mania (1997).
