Nato in Germania nel 1955, studia alla Scuola di Cinema di Monaco. Il suo film, Il principio dell'Arca di Noè, è il primo kolossal realizzato in Germania e apre il Festival di Berlino nel 1984. Tra i suoi film Stargate, Godzilla, Independence Day.
