biography
È nato nel 1953 a Weimar, in Turingia. Dopo la laurea in Psicologia conseguita nel 1980 presso l 'Università di Jena, ha iniziato a dirigere cortometraggi documentari a livello amatoriale. Dal 1981 al 1987 è stato assistente alla regia. Dal 1987 è regista professionista, prodotto, tra gli altri, dalla DEFA. Nel 1991 fonda la casa di produzione indipendente Um Welt Film in cooperazione con altri ex registi DEFA. Dal 1992 è presidente della Thuringian Film Foundation.
