Realizza reportage per “National Geographic”, “Discover”, “GEO”, “Time”, “Newsweek”. Le sue opere fotografiche ricevono diversi premi tra cui il World Press Contest e l’Hearst Award. Ottenuto il brevetto da subacqueo, nel 2005 fonda l’organizzazione Oceanic Preservation Society (OPS). Attivista per la difesa delle specie in via d’estinzione, dopo The Cove, dirige Racing Extinction (2015) e The Game Changers (2018).
