Ha cominciato la sua attività collaborando con la Gpo Film Unit di John Grierson, prima di esordire alla regia nel 1949. In quarant’anni di carriera ha diretto diversi cortometraggi, documentari, lungometraggi di finzione e serie tv, vincendo l’Oscar con Giuseppina (1960).
