È uno dei principali registi della Nouvelle Vague. Assistente del documentarista Georges Rouquier, passa, dopo alcune singolari prove documentarie, alla regia di un lungometraggio a soggetto, Lola, donna di vita (1961), uno dei più straordinari film dell'intero movimento. Attratto soprattutto dai drammi sentimentali, Demy è stato l'autore dei due più importanti musical francesi, Les parapluies de Cherbourg (1963) e Les demoiselles de Rochefort (1966), entrambi interpretati dalle sorelle Francoise Dorléac e Catherine Deneuve.
